"Remagnetizing Headphones" The real deal!

I got the Crystal Radio Bug again! So I started reading and reading. Over the years I have built dozens of crystal radio circuits. Now that I moved out here to Lancaster PA I fired up some of the old circuits. In New jersey using a Mystery Crystal Radio circuit and a 10 foot piece of wire and ground I got 6 loud stations. Out here in PA, Zilch! I went to 30 feet of wire and still nothing! I hung an amp on the circuits and stations appeared even DX. So I decided it was time for some real headphones.

After doing lots of reading I decided to go old school. I went on Ebay and bought a pair of C Brandes Superior Headphones. The top picture is from the Ebay ad! The phones came and here is what was wrong with them. A broken wire on the coil inside one of the phones, a bent diaphragm and dead magnets. The other phone was fine. I was able to salvage the open coil. I was able to straighten out the bent diaphragm. Seeing the common connection for the two coils was under one of the magnets I knew someone was inside with their fat fingers!

In this page I show you how to Re-Magnatizethe your headphone magnets. You are responsible for marking your magnets and putting them back in the correct way. There is a rounded edge on the magnets. On my phones the rounded edges are up. If you reverse the North and South one of your headphones will be out of phase with the other. This will make the center of the sound shift over. You can see if your phones are correct by using your compass on the outside of the phones. Mark the outsides before you start. This page was to show you how to actually Re-Magnetize the Magnets. Other Website pages made me LAUGH! I am the guy who fixes things others have screwed up!

Using the Compass in my watch I labeled all the Magnets. Remember LIKE Poles attract!!!!! So the NORTH pole of a magnet attracts the South Pole of the Compass. The South Pole of the Magnet attracts the North Pole of the Compass.

A.One magnet with North facing up and one with South facing up

B.Old Horseshoe Magnet Labeled North and South

C.Magnets from Headphones labeled North and South

Here we Magnetize using two Magnets. The Magnets are kept apart by a piece of rubber eraser. As you can see the North of the magnet being magnetized goes to the South of the second Magnetizer magnet. The South of the magnet being magnetized goes to the North of the first Magnetizer magnet. It is a magnetic series circuit of sorts!!!

Here we Magnetize using one Magnet. The Magnet is an old Horseshoe from the 40s. As you can see the North of the magnet being magnetized goes to the South of the Magnetizer magnet. The South of the magnet being magnetized goes to the North of the Magnetizer magnet. It is a magnetic series circuit of sorts!!!

UPDATE: I bought a lot of four headphones on E-Dumpster. Two of the phones are C Brandes. One of those has been worked over by Mr. Big Fingers!!! Parts missing and the magnets were left loose inside. Three of the assemblies had the magnets in different ways. My guess is the rounded edge of the magnets means nothing. The Norths of each magnet need to be on the same end.

This is how I am Magnetizing them now using one Magnet. The North of magnets being magnetized goes to the South of the Magnetizer magnet. The South of the magnets being magnetized goes to the North of the Magnetizer magnet. The two magnets sit on their edges during this step!

Have you seen the other websites? Rub a magnet against your magnet! Wrap a coil of wire around the earpiece! Typical Internet Blather!
